Abel - The man who began the business that continues today!Abel
Simonds was the son of Joseph Simonds and Sally Downs. He was born on
December 10,1804 in Fitchburg. Abel
was born on the old homestead in the south part of Fitchburg. The house
is now known as the Elizjah C. Farewall Place. If anyone knows where this
house is and shows me, I will take you to lunch! Later in his childhood
he lived in the house under the shade of the great elm opposite the new
cemetery. Woody should be able to figure that one out, he sawed a tree
down at the "new cemetery" recently! From 10 - 13 Abel lived
in New Hampshire with an uncle, afterwhich he returned to Fitchburg
to learn the trade of scythe-making. This is the turning point folks....
he's the man who started our company!!!!! He served as an apprenticeship
of seven years, earning his board and clothes with a bonus of $50 when
he ended his seven years. |
